What does Mental Health really mean? Do you know how Important it is for You?

(click here to hear Maddy’s radio interview regarding this)

The word Mental means “relating to the mind”. In some countries people perceive the word Mental as “Insane”.

Recently we organised a “community awareness event” focusing on mental well-being. I thought I must share my knowledge with You for Betterment of your life.

Government, Schools, Parents and Media usually focus on physical health whereas I think Mental Health is much more important. How we think and feel has a big impact on our overall health and well-being.

The World Health Organisation predicts that mental health will be the biggest health issue in the developed world over the next few years. Teach kids good mental health skills at home by helping them relax and unwind, deal with anxiety and talk about their every day challenges without fear of being judged.

Definitions from American & British health agencies:
Mental health is how we think, feel and act as we cope with life. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others and make choices.
It is the emotional and spiritual resilience which enables us to enjoy life and to survive pain, disappointment and sadness. It is a positive sense of well-being and an underlying belief in our own worth, and the dignity and worth of others.

Mental health problems do not affect three or four out of every five persons but one out of one.
– Dr. William Menninger

Causes of poor mental health include:
* Stress – emotional, physical, environmental (poverty, discrimination, marginalisation etc.)
* Negative ways of thinking (can lead to self-harm, crime, depression, suicides, all types of abuses, discrimination etc.)
* Experience of abuse – physical, sexual and/or emotional
* Drug and/or Alcohol abuse
* Brain injury

An example of a very successful person, who suffered mental health problems even though he had everything in life, is the legendary Michael Jackson.

Your Mind is Not Your Brain:
It is important to know the difference. Your brain is the physical apparatus. It’s like a TV set which receives waves that carry information (thoughts).
Your mind is pure consciousness & intangible. It produces the thoughts of your consciousness and your personality including your beliefs, attitudes, feelings/emotions, creativity, hopes etc.

I have met many Joyful & Successful people, read many religious documents and consulted a few spiritual gurus; all of them say the same thing i.e. “Our Thoughts become our physical reality“. Happiness & Peace come from within us.
Few scientists/researchers believe that up to 80% of all the illnesses/diseases are a result of mental health problems!! On the other side there are people who have cured their cancer and healed other diseases just by the power of their mind. Mind over Matter…yeah!!

After knowing this secret I decided to learn more. I attended many seminars & professional courses related to mental health and created a plan for Betterment of my life. I experience Joy, inner-Peace, Fulfillment, Gratitude and Self-Love almost every day 🙂
How did I make it possible for myself? No, It’s not Luck or Miracle. It has been possible because:
I truly believe that Success/Failure, Happiness/Depression, Revenge/Forgiveness, Love/Hatred… all is created in our mind! I am responsible for my life hence the director of my movie(life)…

This doesn’t mean my problems are over. Fears do crop up time to time but now I have the tools and confidence to control my emotions and focus. No human being can be perfect. One or more areas of life always need balancing.

The mind can make a heaven out of hell or a hell out of heaven.

If Mental Health is the most important thing in life then why isn’t it part of our basic education???

How can you make yours better?

Tip # 1 : Exercise for Mental Wellness
Exercising not only keeps you physically fit, it also has some Psychological Benefits:
* Reduce daily stress
* Enhance Mental Alertness
* Alleviate Depression
* Enhance Mood
* Increase Self Confidence

(The science behind this is that your body releases Endomorphin (a hormone) during physical training, success experiences, sex and when you laugh which reduces tension and stress; leaving behind a more relaxed and mentally healthier you.)

Do not ignore! Choose to be in control of Your Health.

NB: Teachers/curriculum designers/education coordinators/department heads please email me to discuss further for how we can create awareness amongst the students of your school/college.

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.
– Albert Einstein

A desire to be in charge of our own lives, a need for control, is born in each of us. It is essential to our mental health, and our success, that we take control.
– Robert F. Bennett quotes

In a disordered mind, as in a disordered body, soundness of health is impossible.
– Cicero
